Wheeling
West Virginia lies on a level plain, which rises to steep hills, along the Ohio River. A scenic plaza was built in the heart of the business
district. Two bridges connect Wheeling Island with the rest of the city, one being The Wheeling Suspension Bridge, which was the first bridge
span across the Ohio River and is a registered National Historical Landmark Wheeling Downs Dog Race Track, which features dog races, occupies
one end of the island. It has two principal parks and about 40 public schools, two modern hospitals and is a medical center for the surrounding
region. Wheeling
lies near West Virginia's great coal- and natural-gas-producing region, and these minerals furnish power for many of the city's industries.
Wheeling's most important products include aluminium, bronze, chemical products, garments, glass, iron and steel, metal stampings, plastics, and
tin plate. The city is also a coal shipping center. Tourism is the most important industry in Wheeling, which attracts visitors with its parks,
historic sites, and local events. Grave
Creek Mound is one of the largest Conical mounds constructed during the late Adenia Period. Construction took place in successive stages
from about 250-150 B.C. Wheeling,
nestled cosily along the banks of the Ohio River, has a great deal to offer both residents and tourists alike. Established with a solid
reputation for friendliness and good service and steeped in rich history and bursting with activities for the young and old, Wheeling is your
place to play. The
Wildlife Resources Section is responsible for managing the State's wildlife and the primary objective is to maintain fish and wildlife
populations at levels compatible with the available habitat, while providing maximum opportunities for recreation, research and education.
Wheeling
offers several golf courses, starting from a par 3 golf located adjacent to Ogle bay Park's Driving Range or the Grand Vue Golf Course in
Moundsville to the nine-hole golf course at Wheeling Park. For the golfer who really knows how to play, travel up the hill and try one of Ogle bay
Park's many competitive golf courses. The
Wheeling Downs Racetrack and Gaming Center should be a destination of priority. Greyhound racing, off-track betting, video lottery and
old-fashioned slot machines, or "one-armed bandits," will make an evening at the Downs a feast of activity. Music
is always in the air and the Capitol Music Hall features performances from country to classical as the venue for Jamboree USA and the
Wheeling Symphony Orchestra. The hall is the oldest performance space of its kind in West Virginia and attracts a wide variety of touring
musical groups and Broadway shows as well. Everyone from Kenny Rogers to the Dixie Chicks have delighting audiences for decades.
