The city has an area of about 11 square miles (28 square kilometres). It includes Wheeling Island in the Ohio River. Wheeling is the seat of Ohio County. The Wheeling West Virginia metropolitan area includes Belmont County in Ohio.

Wheeling West Virginia lies on a level plain, which rises to steep hills, along the Ohio River. A scenic plaza was built in the heart of the business district. Two bridges connect Wheeling Island with the rest of the city, one being The Wheeling Suspension Bridge, which was the first bridge span across the Ohio River and is a registered National Historical Landmark Wheeling Downs Dog Race Track, which features dog races, occupies one end of the island. It has two principal parks and about 40 public schools, two modern hospitals and is a medical center for the surrounding region.

Wheeling lies near West Virginia's great coal- and natural-gas-producing region, and these minerals furnish power for many of the city's industries. Wheeling's most important products include aluminium, bronze, chemical products, garments, glass, iron and steel, metal stampings, plastics, and tin plate. The city is also a coal shipping center. Tourism is the most important industry in Wheeling, which attracts visitors with its parks, historic sites, and local events.

Grave Creek Mound is one of the largest Conical mounds constructed during the late Adenia Period. Construction took place in successive stages from about 250-150 B.C.

From the 150-year-old Wheeling Suspension Bridge, gaze at the graceful waters of the Ohio River -- or walk through Victorian Old Town and visit breathtaking homes from the stylish Victorian Era. The Kruger Street Toy and Train Museum in Elm Grove will chronicle the bits and baubles that have delighted children of all ages for years.

Wheeling offers several golf courses, starting from a par 3 golf located adjacent to Ogle bay Park's Driving Range or the Grand Vue Golf Course in Moundsville to the nine-hole golf course at Wheeling Park. For the golfer who really knows how to play, travel up the hill and try one of Ogle bay Park's many competitive golf courses.

The Wheeling Downs Racetrack and Gaming Center should be a destination of priority. Greyhound racing, off-track betting, video lottery and old-fashioned slot machines, or "one-armed bandits," will make an evening at the Downs a feast of activity.

Music is always in the air and the Capitol Music Hall features performances from country to classical as the venue for Jamboree USA and the Wheeling Symphony Orchestra. The hall is the oldest performance space of its kind in West Virginia and attracts a wide variety of touring musical groups and Broadway shows as well. Everyone from Kenny Rogers to the Dixie Chicks have delighting audiences for decades.

Downtown Wheeling features dozens of homes, shops and business establishments ablaze in lights. Downtown merchants, bankers and other professionals join together in decorating the city.
