The courthouse is located at Fourth and Lincoln streets. The courthouse was placed on the state register of historical sites in 1971 and on the national register in 1988. Until recently the courthouse was home to the county historical society's museum. The museum is working on a new home but part of the exhibits can be seen in the federal building lobby. Olympic National Park encompasses three distinctly different ecosystems -- rugged glacier capped mountains , over 60 miles of wild Pacific coast and magnificent stands of old-growth and temperate rain forest Olympic is also known for its biological diversity . Isolated for eons by glacial ice, the waters of Puget Sound and the Strait of Juan de Fuca, the Olympic Peninsula has developed its own distinct array of plants and animals. Eight kinds of plants and five kinds of animals are found on the peninsula and live nowhere else in the world.
Fairchild International Airport - William R. Fairchild International Airport is located within the City limits on the west side of town. The main runway, at 6,350 feet, provides access to every type of aircraft from small commercial jets down. Horizon Air and Harbour Airlines offer daily commuter flights to Seattle and Horizon also has daily flights to Victoria, B.C. Smaller charter companies offer flights to other airports in the region or for sightseeing trips. Black Ball Transport Ferry “Coho” - The Coho provides year round vehicle and passenger service between Port Angeles and Victoria, B.C. Sailing time is approximately 1 hour and 35 minutes. The ferry arrives and departs from downtown Port Angeles to the inner harbour in Victoria. Victoria Express Passenger Ferry - The Victoria Express is a passenger only ferry with service between Port Angeles and Victoria, B.C. Sailing time is approximately 1 hour. Like the Coho, the Victoria Express arrives and departs from downtown Port Angeles to the inner harbour in Victoria. Vern Burton Memorial Community Center - Remodelled in the summer of 1992, the Vern Burton Memorial Community Center is immediately adjacent to City Hall. The main exhibition hall (an old school gym) is 8,000 square feet, excluding the service entry area. Capacity is over 1,100 occupants. A separate meeting area consisting of three meeting rooms are dividable by moveable walls and have an occupancy of 65 persons. Restrooms off the lobby are easily accessible from the meeting rooms. Another set of restrooms flank the service entry area to the north. Two exits on the south wall of the main hall access a landscaped interior atrium. All exits and restrooms are accessible to persons with disabilities. The main parking lot is on the east off of 4th & Peabody. Additional street parking is available to the north. Electrical Outlets are available throughout the main hall for servicing a variety of activities. Microphone outlets are located throughout the hall; compact disc; cassette player and extra microphones are also available. The main hall has multipurpose fixtures for various lighting applications and a house phone is available in the lobby, with an outlet available in the main hall. The main hall can also be divided in half for dual activities. Everything a caterer should need for serving meals: ice machine, dishwasher, warming ovens, hot plates, steam tray, and plenty of counter space are available in the adjoining prep kitchen and tables and chairs are available for up to 300 people. William Shore Memorial Pool- William Shore Memorial Pool was named for William "Bill" Shore, a Port Angeles coach and physical education instructor who was prominent in swimming circles for many years. The "U" shaped pool includes an area 42' by 75' for distance swimming, a 30' x 33' area for beginners and a diving area. Swim lessons for all abilities are available for students year-round, from ages 4 through Senior Citizens. Placement tests are held free of charge to determine proper class level. Specialty classes are offered, including Red Cross Lifeguard Training and Water Safety Instructor training. |
