Oak Lawn - Illinois  - History

Because of its proximity to a large city like Chicago, Oak Lawn has gone through numerous periods of growth, which were strongly influenced by the convenience of a fine highway network and the excellent community facilities of a mass transit system. As it looks to growth from within the community, the Village is entering an exciting period of redevelopment Thoughtful planning is ongoing, keeping Oak Lawn at the top of the list of fine communities in the Chicago suburbs.

The Village of Oak Lawn is proud of its many fine services. An experienced and well-trained staff of paramedics who utilize state-of-the-art emergency service equipment serves residents. Five ambulances, two rated as advanced life support and three as basic life support, are located at firehouses throughout the Village. The Oak Lawn Fire Department attained a Class 1 Fire Rating from the Insurance Services Organization allowing businesses and residents to realize the best possible rates on their fire insurance.

During summer, the citizens of Oak Lawn and neighbouring communities visit the Village-sponsored weekly Farmers Market every Wednesday in the center of town where farmers from southern Illinois, Michigan and Indiana sell fresh flowers, vegetables, honey, fresh fruits, home grown herbs and spices. The Public Works Department maintains the Village streets. An on-going program of resurfacing keeps the neighbourhood streets in good repair.
