Des
Plaines is one of the original growth communities in the Chicago suburban
area. Its boom years occurred in the decades that followed World War II,
as expressways made suburban living attractive and practical. During that
period and the decades after, Des Plaines learned to manage growth,
attract business and industry, and plan for the needs of its population.
Des
Plaines is a comfortable community. Its well-kept homes range from modest
brick bungalows to large and elaborate executive style homes, and from cozy
rental apartments to luxury town homes and condominiums.
The
city boasts an extensive parks system with recreation facilities that are
easily envied. Dozens of clubs and organizations, park district programs,
a local drama group, and community concert band keep residents busy and
entertained.
Four
highly rated public school districts serve most areas of the city and a
community college is within city boundaries.
Des
Plaines is home to a large contingent of prominent business and light
industrial firms, as well as small to medium size companies.
Shopping
is a convenient pleasure for Des Plaines residents, who have access to
dozens of large and small shopping centres positioned along the city's
major thoroughfares. Traditional downtown Des Plaines has undergone a
gradual shift away from retail stores and toward professional offices and
services. There are still many retailers operating successfully along
Graceland Avenue and Miner Street in the downtown area. Redevelopment is
taking place in the perimeter of the downtown area. As the ring of
residential condominiums surrounding downtown Des Plaines grows, the focus
on more retailing and specialty shops & services is expected to
return.
Des
Plaines is a wonderful place to do business or reside, having a variety of
housing opportunities designed to accommodate everyone's living and
financial needs. From contemporary high rise condominiums surrounding the
downtown area to upscale new single family homes with classic, traditional
designs, Des Plaines neighbourhoods are friendly and characteristic of a
community that cares. Approximately thirty churches and a nearby synagogue
accommodate individual religious preferences. A well rounded community,
Des Plaines offers something for everyone.
The
City provides easy access to major tollways and the world's busiest
airport, O'Hare International Airport, which provides an excellent means
of domestic/international travel for both business and pleasure. One can
travel from downtown Des Plaines to the airport terminals by vehicle in
less than 10 minutes. Bus, train and subway service is readily available
to provide convenient comfortable transportation.
