 Lakewood - Colorado - History

Bustling at the base of the Rocky Mountains, Lakewood is part of the Denver Metropolitan Area. With a heritage stretching back to Colorado's earliest Gold Rush days in the 1860s, Lakewood incorporated June 24, 1969. Funded in part by a State Historical Fund grant award from the Colorado Historical Society, the walking tour provides an easy, user-friendly way to learn more about local history and the Belmar park area. Lakewood has the lowest sales tax rate in metro Denver and one of the lower property tax rates. Many municipal services rely on these tax sources for General Fund revenue. To utilize General Fund revenue to supplement utility revenue for stormwater needs would increase the current difficulty of providing other City services such as public safety. The Street Maintenance Division resurfaces numerous miles of city streets each year. This resurfacing includes seal coats to seal streets and prolong their useful life, and asphalt overlays to bring streets that have fallen into disrepair up to an acceptable condition

The City's current drainage maintenance program is limited to emergencies and specific complaints. Consequently, the large investment made in existing drainage facilities is being ignored and the facilities are deteriorating and becoming less effective in conveying stormwater. Some portions of the system are decades old metal pipe that have corroded resulting in collapses and property damage

Street lights are installed in new developments as they are constructed. In established areas street lights can be installed at intersections and at other areas where they contribute to traffic safety. The City does not install street lights to illuminate private property.
