The Bisbee
Mining & Historical Museum has forged an affiliation with the
Smithsonian Institution to create a mineral museum in Bisbee The Copper
Queen Hotel was built in 1902 to house visitors on mining business.
Houses were built along the steep mountainsides, while the canyon bottom was
reserved for businesses. The Pythian
Castle was typical of early Bisbee's lodges, where no money was spared on
opulence. The mining company build its headquarters in the heart of downtown
just before the turn of the century. Castle
Rock was early Bisbee's most visible landmark, denoting a fresh-water
spring below. Bisbee residents and visitors enjoy the plaza in front of the museum, with its half-size steam engine and
grassy lawn. Parks such as
Queen's Plaza have to be fit in wherever there's a little free space. Colorful
streets offer shops filled with treasures. This part of Main
Street was rebuilt , using more fireproof materials after the great fire of 1908. |
