Montgomery has been the Capital of Alabama since 1847. Today, State government provides direct and indirect employment for many of the citizens and Montgomery is the hub of the Alabama political system.

The City of Montgomery is governed by a Mayor and nine Council members. Mayor Bobby Bright oversees the day-to-day operation of our City Departments and the Mayor and City Council meet twice monthly to establish City ordinances and policies.

Montgomery covers about 144 square miles of land (373 square Km) and has a population of approximately 200,000. The average annual temperature is around 67 degrees (19.4 C^o ) and the average annual rainfall is just over 54 inches (170 cm).
