Gualaceo - Culture

Gualaceo’s village is located in Ecuador, east of the city of Cuenca, at the west margin of the Santa Barbara River. North of Gualaceo is located Paute, South of the town is Sigsig. Gualaceo limits with the province of Morona Santiago at its east side.

Gualaceo is located at 3,600 meters above sea level but its weather is nice and temperate.

Gualaceo is famous for its important Sunday Indian market. It also has some importance as a tourist resort and has a pretty location by Santa Barbara. It is 36 km from Cuenca at a pleasant elevation of about 2,370 meters above sea level. The town is quite progressive and has a large and spacious modern church with good stained-glass windows.

The Gualaceo market is not tourist oriented. It is a basic goods market for the region inhabitants.

Visit the market of Gualaceo with all its folkloric handicrafts and goods. At Chordeleg visit the craft and jewellery, shops, also visit the museum where artisans and weavers are often at work. Lunch is included.

Visit the Santa Barbara River. Five minutes from Gualaceo lies Chordeleg, a picturesque town nationally famous for its handicrafts, especially their work in silver filigree, weavings, and embroideries. Beautiful scenery.
