Punta Cana & Bavaro - History |
It was in 1969 that a wealthy American from Puerto Rico was flying over the southeast end of the Dominican Republic. Looking for a place to establish a Merchant Marine School, he came across an isolated strip of beach with sand so white and the ocean so clear and tranquil. Protected by a coral reel, which extends the length of the beach (8km) he had just discovered what is known today as Bavaro Beach. Persuading
other fellow American investors, they purchased a piece of this land and
open the first hotel here. In 1978 the first international resort in the
area was opened. Twenty
years ago, Punta Cana in the East was no more than a lonesome stretch of
prime beachfront bush land on the country's isolated eastern tip. The
Punta Cana area was damaged by Hurricane Georges in 1998. Most hotels and
attractions were quickly repaired and reopened. Today
there are numerous resorts located along this beachfront and it has become
one of Dominican Republic hot spots for tourism. That
dazzling diamond in the rough has been
chiseled into a multi-million dollar specimen of tropical beauty. The
beach area of Punta Cana, Bavaro and Macao are the fastest growing tourism
destinations in the Caribbean. The area though developed has managed to keep that tranquility and beauty that has attracted visitors for more than three decades. Located not more that 15 minutes from Bavaro is the Punta Cana International Airport. Open in 1984 to accommodate the increase in tourism in the area, the airport gives visitors the feeling of the Caribbean the minute you get off the plane. The buildings designed with thatched hut roofs offers the luxuries of most modern day facilities. |
