Las
Terrenas is situated in the Samana peninsular, which lies on the
north-east coast of the Dominican Republic, part of the rugged island that
Columbus named Hispaniola or ‘Little Spain’, a pedigree still
palpable today in its lively mixture of Caribbean and Latin cultures. The
Samana Peninsula is arguably the island’s most beautiful corners,
with colourful little clapboard houses dotted among the coconut palms and
pine trees that festoon the lower mountain slopes, splendid beaches in the
Las Terrenas area, the 160 ft Rio Limon waterfall in the hills - and the
coastal mangrove swamps of the Los Haitises National Park.
From
Las Terrenas it is possible to observe yearly from November to March, the
spectacle of the humpbacked whales which leave the artic regions, fleeing
the cold, to come and give birth on the Silver Banks. On the bottom of its
deep waters rest the remains of the galleons and Spanish vessels which
were sunk close to its 60 kilometres of white sand beaches and coconut
trees its seaports and international airport.
