Boca Chica - History

Once a quiet fishing village Boca Chica was developed in the early 1900’s by a man named "Jaun Bautista Vicini" who established a sugar mill in Andres. This sugar mill gave way to the Batey Andres. (Note: Every sugar mill had its own Batey, or town where employees lived with an economy dependent on the sugar mill).

By the 1940’s Boca Chica had become the favourite summer place for residents of Santo Domingo society. Entire families would move clothing and households here for the summer. The ladies would sip cocktails and bathe in the evening, because sun was bad for their delicate complexions. Children would run free as the breeze, and the gentlemen would commute from the city.

In 1952 the State seeing the potential in this tropical haven built the first hotel there, which become the social centre of the period. A place to see others and be seen.

Gaining international attention Boca Chica attracted politicians, diplomats, businessmen, and other celebrities to this paradise. Men like "Juan Domingo Peron" the president of Argentina, "Jose Figueres" the president of Costa Rica and celebrities like "Kim Novak" from Hollywood. Today Boca Chica draws international travellers from all over the world to its tranquil blue waters and sandy beach. Offshore you can see the islands of LaMatica and La Pinos.

Boca Chica offers clear waters, slow currents, a yacht club and marina, nearby golf at San Andrés and excellent seafood restaurants. The new Boca Chica is more popular than ever!

Major highway construction works will soon reduce time to reach Boca Chica from Santo Domingo. Still, today Boca Chica is barely a 30-minute drive from the capital city's historical, gastronomy, shopping and nightlife attractions.
