The City of Edmonton’s population is expected to grow from 616,000 in 1996 to 829,000 people in 2020. Growth in the region surrounding Edmonton will result in a population of 1.17 million people in the Edmonton Census Metropolitan Area by 2020. The vast majority of Edmonton’s growth will occur in suburban areas of the city. Demographic changes will play an important role in the future. Edmonton’s population is aging and will have a significantly larger proportion of seniors in its population. The University is by size the second largest University in Canada and is located in Edmonton, the provincial capital of Alberta. On any given day, there are 60,000 people on campus - roughly equivalent to the population of Red Deer. Compared to other Univercities its size, the UofA is one of the safest in North America. This is because the UofA actively publishes campus crime statistics and builds community-oriented solutions to deal with the identified problems.        Some of our more popular community programs include Safewalk, a walk-home escort service for staff and students, Campus Neighbourhood Watch for residences, a two-day awareness and self-defence program for women called RAD, Campus Checkstop, Bicycle and Property ID clinics, Alcohol Awareness and Server Intervention training, and the email alert program which sends immediate crime alert messages to over 6000 staff and students. Students are encouraged to volunteer with many of these programs.

The Edmonton Public Library is one of the busiest libraries in Canada. It is also one of the top two attractions for children and adults in this city. The Edmonton Public Library system offers more than a million books and other materials for the information and pleasure of its users.

The City of Edmonton Community Services Department operates three public golf courses all located within the Capital City Parks river valley system. 

The River Valley Golf Courses are neatly tucked along side the North Saskatchewan river, and offer a quality golf experience for the experienced to beginner. municipal golf course, dating back to 1905. This 18 hole, 6027 yard track is typically suited to mid handicap players and features wide fairways. Riverside Golf Course caters to the more experienced player looking for a challenge. This 6423 yard golf course is heavily treed with gently rolling hills. Rundle Golf Club is an executive par three course suited for the senior, beginner or practicing player. A 2858 yard layout with holes ranging from 110 to 240 yards in length.

Edmonton Alberta Canada has more green space (over 460 parks) than any other city in Canada. In fact, our river valley forms the country's longest urban park.

On July 1, 1984, the doors opened on a new universe of space and science education and entertainment. As one of Northern Alberta's premiere attractions, it has thrilled, entertained and educated nearly 0.5 million visitors each year. This interesting and unique 57,000 sq. ft. facility was designed by the renowned Douglas J. Cardinal, known for his striking and innovative buildings. In 1980, the City of Edmonton selected the Edmonton Space & Science Centre as the City's flagship project commemorating the Province of Alberta's 75th Anniversary. The design of this unique Centre is an art form that required the most advanced computer aided design tools. As a blending of art and science, it conveys a place of occasion, discovery, and surprise. Its spiral, unfolding form reflects the human spirit, symbolizing our triumphs and achievements. Rising like a space object, dynamic, vibrant, fluid and graceful, the Centre teases our imagination out of the landscape and into the reality, vastness and fantasy of space. The building is situated in Coronation Park.
