99 years later, in 1922, near the city of Planaltina, the foundation stone of the new capital was laid. In 1953 a Commission to locate the New
Federal Capital was created.
This Commission, two years later, 1955, makes the final decision on the location for the New Capital City to be built. In 1956 the Congress enacts the Bill of
Anapolis and the Pilot Plan is published. In October of the same year the
construction works started, before the final decision on the Pilot Plan, which
was proposed by Lucio Costa, was agreed on. Lucio Costa won the contest in 1957
and, in 1958, the first satellite town was founded. Year 1960 was the Inauguration Year for Brasilia. The Three Powers of the Republic were seated in Brasilia. Most of the Plan was not materialized yet. From 1961 to 1981 most of the building works that the Pilot Plan had planned for was completed. The Central Bank Building was one of the last ones to be finished. In 1987 UNESCO declares Brasilia as part of the World Cultural Heritage. In 1990 Joaquim Domingos Roriz was the first elected Governor of Brasilia. In 2000 the number of the inhabitants in Brasilia reached 2,000,000 exceeding by far the initial planning, according to which a total of 500,000 had been calculated. Photo Copyright and
