 The
history of Belo Horizonte goes back to the time of the "bandeirantes"
(explores) who passed through in search of gold and precious stones. They
ended up finding other natural riches and founded the village of Cural
Del-Rey surrounded by the Serra do Curral, at the beginning of the XVIII
century. The transfer of the capital of Minas Gerais, from Ouro Preto to
Belo Horizonte, symbolized the rupture of the old monarchy and the hope of
the republic. Inaugurated on December 12, 1897, it was the first planned
city in Brazil.
