The Bariloche Foundation is a private, non-profit Research Institute, associated to the United Nations University (UNU), UNESCO, the International Federation of Institutes for Advanced Study (IFIAS), and the Asociación de Televisión Educativa Iberoamericana (ATEI). It was founded on March 28, 1963, by a group of Argentine scientists and businessmen for the purpose of furthering research, training, technical assistance, diffusion, and other creative activities in San Carlos de Bariloche, Argentina. It is supported by private and public, national and international sources.
Bariloche is a ski town. South America's and Argentina's oldest ski center, located on the shores of Lake Nahuel Huapi. San Carlos de Bariloche is actually a beautiful lakeside village housing the area's majority of hotels, restaurants, nightclubs, coffee houses and shops. Swiss style architecture, chocolate shops and ski promotions all over town make this South America's premier ski community. Bariloche was founded in 1902 and attracted many European immigrants and retains the title of "Little Switzerland" of South America. Ceramica Bariloche was just started as a hobby of the Razza family in 1948, becoming a commercial enterprise in 1950. In those days, none of the necessary basic elements, like clay or trained workers existed in this town, not even any other handcraft productive activity of certain importance. But the high artistic spirit of the pioneer, who today is 98 years old, together with his strong desire to train young people into this task, gave tremendous impulse to this activity, as noble and ancient as man himself, which combines in a creative way, different european techniques with designs inspired in native flowers and Indian drawings. |
